The Comeback: Defying Gravity (and the Calendar)
They say you never forget how to ride a bike, but they don't tell you how much harder the hills feel after a few years away.
I’ve been an avid cyclist for 20+ years, but life has a way of shifting your gears for you. Between a busy career and a health issue that sidelined me for far too long, my road bike has seen more dust than asphalt lately. The good news? That health hurdle is officially in the rearview mirror, and I’m cleared to get back in the saddle.
The Weekend Warrior Reality
Getting back in shape at this stage of the game is what I like to call a "slow-motion spectacle." With a full-time job keeping me busy during the week, I’m strictly a weekend warrior for now. My legs might not be what they were twenty years ago, and my waistline has expanded a bit more than I’d like to admit, but the fire is still there.
Counting Down to Daylight Savings
I’m currently counting down the days until Daylight Savings. There’s nothing like that extra hour of evening light to turn a stressful workday into a sunset recovery ride. Once those clocks shift, the "wobbly pedal strokes" will become a daily occurrence again.
What’s in Store for the Old Man Cyclist
This site isn't about podiums or carbon fiber aero-everything. It’s about the journey back. I’ll be taking you along as I explore what rural Texas has to offer—the hidden backroads, the best gravel-adjacent asphalt, and (most importantly) the small-town restaurants that make the climb worth it.
If you’re a "seasoned citizen" trying to outrun your own shadow, or just someone who appreciates a good Texas road story, welcome to the ride. We might be slower up the hills, but we’re definitely staying longer at the coffee shop.
